The primary aim of the ESDP (Eurotransplant Senior DR-compatible program) study is to assess the effects of allocating kidneys from deceased donors over 65 year and older. This is based on either waiting time, without prospective matching for HLA antigens (current practice) or HLA-DR compatibility followed by waiting time. The ESDP study includes patients aged 65 years and older, who have been listed for kidney transplantation and the Eurotransplant Senior Program (ESP) in particular. Most of the transplantation centers in Austria, Belgium, Germany and The Netherlands participate in the ESDP-study. They collect follow-up of the enrolled patients according to the study protocol and report them to Eurotransplant.
Inclusion of new patients in the ESDP study has been stopped by March 1, 2014. The reason is that inclusion of patients was not sufficient to finish the study within the planned timeframe. The follow-up of all registered patients will be performed according to protocol. This will result in a formal end of the study by March 1, 2015, when at least one year of follow-up data will be available of all registered patients.
