Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Slovenia are the eight countries cooperating within the Eurotransplant region
Organ transplantation is a lifechanging and quality-of-life enhancing treatment option for patients with end-stage organ failure. Eurotransplant was set up in 1967 by Professor Jon van Rood to take full advantage of the opportunities for organ transplants.
As an international non-profit organisation, it acts as a mediator between donor hospitals and transplant centers for the benefit of patients in need of an organ transplant in all its member states.
The Eurotransplant network consists of Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Slovenia, serving a total population of around 136 million people.
International organ exchange guarantees the optimal
distribution of scarce organs by offering them to a
suitable recipient in another country, when there is no
matching recipient on the national waiting list in the
donor's country.
Cross border exchange is an important way of increasing
the number of organs available to a wider population, and
is life-saving for specific patient groups such as urgent
or highly-immunised patients and pediatric patients.
Exchanging organs across borders is especially valuable
for smaller countries because of their inherently limited
donor and recipient pool. Since the 70's Eurotransplant
had cooperation agreements with different countries for
these specific patient groups.
All EU member states are obliged to fulfull the requirements of Directive 2012/25/EU on reporting and handling of Serious Adverse Events (SAE) and Serious Adverse Reactions (SAR) in the field of organ donation and transplantation. Eurotransplant (ET) offers a handling service to all its member states. read more
The total population of the eight Eurotransplant member states numbers almost 135 million people. Within this region there are 1,601 donor hospitals and 77 transplant centers. On the waiting list there are 16,000 patients who need a donor organ. Every year almost 10,000 new patients are added to the waiting list. Eurotransplant yearly allocates more than 7,000 organs.read more
